Bruce Scherer
Senior Consultant

Bruce recently joined PCT, Inc. and is currently Senior Consultant for particulate control, specializing in electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). As a PCT team member, his responsibilities include characterizing particulate matter and other emissions from utility boilers, and specifically improving collection efficiency of these emissions by both dry and wet electrostatic precipitators, at a minimum cost to our clients.

Mr. Scherer previously worked for the Electric Power Research Institute, replacing Dr. Altman upon his retirement in early 2009 until joining PCT starting in 2012. During his tenure at ERPI, he was responsible for a broad range of research that included power supply development, precipitator optimization, wet ESP performance characterization, software model upgrades, sorbent injection systems research and installation of expert system software on two wet FGDs. Two patents in Mr. Scherer’s name are currently in-process by EPRI. He has also recently authored an EPRI research report defining necessary state-of-the-art ESP modifications for meeting the new existing unit EGU MACT particulate material limits.

Prior to joining EPRI, Bruce worked for over three decades in the industry with both First Energy and Consumers Energy Corporations. In his role as Outage Manger at First Energy’s Bay Shore Plant, he was responsible for a broad range of maintenance issues, including various precipitator repairs. At Consumers Energy, he was responsible, over a 28 year period, for a wide range of pulverized coal fired plant equipment and personnel. Some highlights include an analog to digital controls upgrades as I&C Supervisor, precipitator rebuilds and upgrades, including the installation of an innovative catalytic based SO3 flue gas conditioning system as the Precipitator Subject Matter Expert. He was responsible for flow modeling and controls upgrades to support low NOx combustion retrofits. Bruce retired from Consumers in 2006 as Outage Manager at the Whiting Plant.

Mr. Scherer holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Toledo, and a Masters of Business Administration, also from the University of Toledo. He has authored a number of papers and presentations, given in such forums as the EPRI meetings and the Mega Symposium, FOMIS conferences and the Particulate Users Group meetings. Bruce represented EPRI, First Energy and Consumers Energy to the Fossil Operation and Maintenance Information System (FOMIS) for over 20 years. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Society for Electrostatic Precipitation (ISESP).
